Submental liposuction (removal of the fat under the chin)

Submental liposuction is a procedure in which the fatty layer located under the chin is removed; correcting the appearance of a goiter. It is a very common and minimally invasive intervention, and the recovery is quick.

This procedure is recommended for people:

• who are not satisfied with their physical appearance due to excess fat under the chin;
• who want a more defined appearance of the face and neck;
• who want a more toned and smooth look in the under-chin area.

It is important to remember that if the size of the goitre is very large or if the patient has sagging skin under the chin, it might be necessary for submental liposuction to be performed in combination with a neck lift or ICLED to smooth and tone the skin in that region.

How is submental liposuction performed?

Following a consultation, we will determine what the expectations are and what methods I will use to create the patient’s desired look.

On the day of the operation, I will make an incision under the chin to insert a liposuction cannula (vibration or laser), through which I will remove the excess fat. The whole process is completed in less than an hour, and everything will happen under local anaesthesia.

How do I prepare for submental liposuction?

In preparation for the operation, it will be necessary to:

• avoid taking aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs;
• keep yourself very well hydrated.

What will happen after submental liposuction?

Since the intervention is not very invasive, recovery will be quick and easy.

Immediately after the operation, you need to wear a compress for a few days. You will not feel pain, but the area may be bruised and inflamed for about a week. After the first few days you will be able to return to work, and after 14 days the operation will be completely healed.

The results can be maintained for many years, as long as you follow a healthy lifestyle, do sports and make sure not to accumulate many extra pounds.
