Abdominoplasty (also known as a “Tummy Tuck”)
Abdominoplasty is a procedure in which the abdominal area is reduced and smoothed, by removing excess fat and skin. This operation is very popular among women who have gone through pregnancy, because it restores the body to its original shape and can eliminate the marks left by pregnancy.
This operation is recommended for people:
- who have excess fat and/or skin in the abdominal area, which cannot disappear through exercise or diet;
- who have stretch marks in the abdominal area;
- whose shape of the abdomen has changed unpleasantly following pregnancy or massive weight loss.
How is abdominoplasty performed?
Following a consultation, we will determine what needs to be done to achieve the patient’s desired result.
On the day of surgery, I will create an incision in the pubic area from one iliac crest to the other. Next, I will form a space in the abdominal area to then place the abdominal muscles in a tighter position. Afterwards, I will remove the excess fat, pull the abdominal skin over the incision, remove the excess, and secure everything with sutures. Finally, I will reposition the navel to its original position.
How do I prepare for a tummy tuck?
In preparation for the operation, it will be necessary to:
- Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs;
- Make sure you keep yourself very well hydrated.
What will happen after the intervention?
Total abdominoplasty requires an incision from one iliac to another, but depending on the complexity of the procedure, it is possible to create a smaller incision along with one around the navel.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and you will stay two nights in the clinic. Then when you go home, you’ll need a few days of rest.
I will insert fluid drainage tubes, which I will instruct you to empty several times a day. I will explain on the spot how to change your bandages, what medications to administer and how to care for the incision area. After about two weeks we will remove the sutures.
Healing takes around 6 months, but after a few weeks you will start to become more mobile and no longer feel the discomfort. In the first part of the recovery process it is vital to rest, take care of yourself and not expose yourself to too much physical effort.
