Mastopexy – properties, benefits, side effects and contraindications

How Mastopexy works

Mastopexy is a surgical intervention aimed at lifting saggy breasts. This can be done by using only the already existing tissue or by inserting a breast implant. The decision depends on the patient’s desire regarding the size and appearance of the breast, as well as the existing tissue at the time of the consultation.

The benefits of mastopexy

The intervention gives a youthful and attractive appearance to the breasts. In addition, it increases the level of self-confidence of patients.

When is Mastopexy recommended?

Mastopexy is an ideal solution for people who have noticed a sagging of the breasts due to the passage of time, pregnancy, breastfeeding or considerable weight loss. In addition, it is recommended for patients who have asymmetrical breasts or whose areolas have changed their position, shape or size over time.

Side effects Mastopexy

Following the operation, the patient will have compresses around her breasts and wear a special bra for support. You will feel moderate discomfort, for which you will be prescribed painkillers. The area may be inflamed, bruised, or itchy, all of which are completely normal symptoms.

During the first week, you will have to limit your activities so as not to put pressure on your chest. You will have to sleep only on your back, slightly elevated, and rest. After two weeks, the sutures will be removed.

Depending on the job you have, you may be able to return to work after the first 2-4 days, but it is important to be more careful with your breasts in the first few weeks after surgery.

How Mastopexy is performed

After a consultation, I will understand what the patient’s wishes are and what we can do to fulfil them. The incisions used and the method of breast lift may vary greatly depending on the level of sagging, their size, the position of the areolas and the elasticity of the skin.

Afterwards, in the operating room, under general anaesthesia, I will remove the excess skin and reposition the areola – if it has changed over time, I will reduce it to the configuration agreed upon during the consultation. I will then reshape the breast to create the shape, size and position desired by the patient. Finally, I will close the incision with sutures.

The incisions will be around the areola, continuing down and stopping below the breast. My goal is to create the least incisions and as hidden as possible I can make, but these details vary from case to case. Also depending on each body, after healing, they can be almost invisible.

Contraindications for Mastopexy

There are no absolute contraindications for breast lift surgery.

However, a relative contraindication is related to potential future pregnancies, as weight gain and breastfeeding may have an impact on the result.

Smoking can also negatively influence postoperative healing. Therefore, it is recommended that the patient give up this habit for a period before and after the intervention.
