Hyperbaric oxygen – properties, benefits, side effects and contraindications
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a therapy that causes patients to breathe pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, has been used for many years as a treatment for conditions such as decompression sickness and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Over the past decade, oxygen has been discovered to be an important component in skin rejuvenation, to slow down the ageing process and improve elasticity.
Even for patients who pay extra attention to skin care, exposure to UV rays, stress and pollution can negatively influence the skin’s natural ageing process. Thus, the use of HBOT has been found to reduce the formation of wrinkles from UV irradiation.
The classic treatment with hyperbaric oxygen has been transformed into a non-invasive cosmetic procedure with multiple benefits, which can be used as such or in combination with a multitude of nourishing serums for the skin.
How hyperbaric oxygen works
This type of treatment is a non-invasive solution that anyone can benefit from, regardless of allergies or reservations about classic cosmetic interventions.
The revolutionary technique uses concentrated oxygen that it sends directly to the skin cells, through a special device that increases the oxygen concentration to an atmospheric pressure of 1 bar. The intensity is adjustable and adapts according to the patient’s comfort.
Unlike other cosmetic treatments, it can be done at any time, including pregnancy, is relaxing and has no serious side effects or recovery time.
Hyperbaric Oxygen benefits, conditions and side effects
The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen
There are many benefits of oxygen therapy, including:
- Restores elasticity
- Reduces redness and inflammation
- Increases the resistance of elastin and collagen fibres in the skin
- Regulates blood flow and increases the number of blood cells
- It normalises the metabolic rate of the skin and increases cellular metabolism
- Gives the skin a radiant, youthful appearance
- Accelerates cell growth and regeneration
- It reduces cellular stress and increases cellular energy
- Improves skin’s ability to absorb vitamins, minerals, nutrients and skin care solutions
Conditions in which hyperbaric oxygen is recommended
Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is recommended for anyone who notices skin ageing as a result of exposure to UV rays, stress or pollutants.
It is especially indicated in dermatological problems of the face and body, such as:
- Wrinkles
- Acne
- Rosacea
- Hyperpigmentation of the skin
- Scars
- Post-surgical and post-traumatic edema
Adverse reactions Hyperbaric oxygen
Although hyperbaric oxygen treatment is non-invasive and safe for anyone, there are some side effects to consider:
Temporary redness of the skin
If you have sensitive skin, the serum used during the treatment and the oxygen may cause the treated area to become red, which should fade within a few hours after the procedure.
Inflammation of the treated area
Oxygen facials can cause inflammation due to the intensity with which the oxygen is directed at the skin. This can make the skin look full or swollen, but this is a natural reaction of the body and passes within a few hours.
Allergic reaction to a serum
During the treatment, a multitude of serums can be used to allow the breath of oxygen to penetrate deep into the skin. If you know you are allergic to any skin care ingredients, be sure to tell your esthetician.
Discontinue use of any products that cause prolonged itching, swelling, pain, or redness.
