Onychomycosis

ONYCHOMYCOSIS is a fungal infection of the nails (fingernails and / or toenails).

Risk factors:

• Trauma (tight shoes, shock – peeling off the nail from the nail bed facilitates the penetration of microorganisms).
• Warm and humid environment.
• The use of occlusive shoes, made of synthetic materials that do not allow the foot to breathe.
• Deficient immune system.
• Public baths / saunas.
• Family history of onychomycosis.
• Old age.

What can we do to prevent mycosis in the nails?

• Avoid lending shoes/towels.
• Avoid going barefoot in public spaces/saunas/bathrooms/hotels.
• Use light shoes lined with natural materials.
• Disinfect manicure/pedicure tools before and after each use.
• It is ideal for socks to be made of natural materials, changed daily and washed at a minimum of 60 degrees.
• Disinfect the shoes using disinfectant sprays.
• If you suffer from hyperhidrosis, let the shoes air out/dry before using them again.
• Use protective gloves when performing household activities.

How do we treat onychomycosis?

• Topical treatment: nail varnishes, creams, ointments, solutions.
• Systemic treatment with antifungal solutions.
• Laser treatment.
• Nail removal: surgical/chemical.

In the clinic we can help you with two types of lasers for the treatment of onychomycosis:

Spectra Laser: uses a laser wave to heat the tissues, the increased temperature leads to the death of the fungi; sessions are spaced every 4 weeks, multiple sessions are required.

CO2 Laser: creates channels at the level of the nail, thus topically applied antifungals manage to penetrate deeply, increasing their effectiveness.

Nails grow by 1-3 mm/month, for this reason you have to arm yourself with patience, because regardless of the chosen therapeutic option, the treatment will extend over a longer period of time. A combination of different types of treatments may have better results.
