Hair loss
HAIR LOSS is a condition with a strong psycho-emotional impact. The causes of hair loss can be diverse, and the treatment must be adapted according to the suspected cause. The hair growth cycle has 4 phases:
- Anagen: active growth phase.
- Catagen: transition phase.
- Telogen: resting phase.
- Exogenous: the phase in which the sheath is released.
Hair loss can be scarring / non-scarring.
Non-scarring alopecia = the reason for hair loss is not related to the fibrosis of the hair bulb / surrounding tissue.
Causes of alopecia:
- Alopecia areata is often associated with autoimmune diseases (often at the thyroid level).
- Tinea capitis – fungal infection.
- Telogen effluvium hair loss – induced by certain conditions, stress, post-covid19; it usually appears a few weeks after a stressful event.
- Androgenetic alopecia: genetic predisposition and family history are important. It manifests itself differently in women compared to men: women – diffuse hair loss especially at the vertex level, in men – hair loss especially at the temporal, frontal and vertex levels, not affecting the occipital area.
- Trichotillomania – a psycho-emotional condition in which the patient pulls out hairs, giving rise to patches of alopecia.
- Traction alopecia through the use of hairstyles in which the hair is held very tightly.
- Cicatricial alopecia occurs as a result of an intense inflammatory process located at the hair root level and usually occurs in conditions such as: lupus, post-burns, lichen plano-pilaris, decalcifying folliculitis, etc.
The dermatological consultation is essential because the treatment is customised according to the suspected type of alopecia. In certain situations, a skin biopsy is required, the only one that can establish the diagnosis with certainty.
The treatment is based on topical solutions (supply of nutrients, vasodilators, energising substances, antimicrobials – if an infection is suspected), systemic treatments, PRP.
PRP is a treatment that is performed using the patient’s plasma. Blood is collected and centrifuged, in this way the red blood cells are separated from the plasma, which is rich in growth factors (we rely on their activity during the treatment).
In order to increase the chances of success of the treatment, it is important for the patient to have a balanced diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, to hydrate sufficiently and to have a balanced program in the weeks preceding the PRP treatment.
