Breast reduction

Breast reduction – known as reduction mammoplasty

Breast reduction surgery is the procedure by which skin, fat and breast tissue are removed from the breast area. This operation is often performed in combination with a breast lift, called a mastopexy.

The procedure is recommended for people who:

  • Experience back problems due to the weight of their breasts;
  • Have restrictions in order to practice physical activities, due to the size of the breasts;
  • Have asymmetrical breasts (one is larger than the other) and want to correct this;
  • Are insecure about the size of their breasts and want a different look, better proportioned to the rest of the body.

How is breast reduction surgery performed?

First, we will meet for an initial consultation to determine what your expectations are and what we can do to make them a reality. The method used for breast reduction depends on each case. Therefore, we will discuss in detail what is the best option for your breasts, how I will proceed on the day of the operation, and any other questions you may have.

During the operation, I will make the incision previously discussed, through which I will remove excess fat, breast tissue and skin. I will detach the nipple from its current position and reposition it. After making sure the breasts are symmetrical, I close the incisions with sutures.

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia.

How do I prepare for breast reduction?

In preparation for the operation, it will have to:

  • Avoid taking aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medication;
  • Keep yourself very well hydrated.
  • In addition, you will need to have a series of blood tests to ensure that you are medically fit for such an intervention.

What happens after the operation?

You will spend a night in the clinic to make sure you feel well and recover easily from the anaesthetic. The next day, you will be able to return home. You will need to set aside a few days for rest, plenty of sleep and hydration. Then, slowly, you will be able to return to your daily activities, as long as you do not expose yourself to increased physical exertion.

After two weeks, we will meet again to remove the threads from the sutures. There may be some bruising and swelling in the breast area, which is completely normal – it will heal in a few weeks.

The final result will be visible one year after the breast reduction surgery, when it will be considered fully healed. Until then, however, you will be able to return to all your usual activities, approximately two months after the procedure.
