Solar allergy
SUN ALLERGY is part of a group of skin conditions called photosensitization reactions (together with phototoxic reactions).
Phototoxic reactions occur when a chemical substance (drug administered topically or systemically) causes, upon contact with UV, a skin reaction similar to allergy or burns. It occurs in all individuals, the genetic predisposition is not relevant, the reaction is dependent on the dose (of the chemical agent but also of UV). It starts a few hours after exposure, and the lesions are located strictly on the area where the skin came into contact with the causative agent.
Photoallergic reactions involve the participation of the immune system. It occurs only in certain individuals with a genetic predisposition, it is not dependent on the dose, and the lesions can extend beyond the exposed areas and does not appear from the first exposure (a preliminary exposure is necessary while the organism sensitises).
Solar allergy can manifest itself in the form of reddish lesions, accompanied by itching, sometimes with the appearance of urticaria lesions, they can be covered with scales, blisters.
Substances that can induce photoallergic reactions: certain classes of antibiotics, thiazide diuretics, tricyclic antidepressants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, certain components of perfumes/cosmetic products.
Avoiding exposure to the sun and using products with SPF remain important elements in preventing the occurrence of sun allergies, as well as avoiding the most common causative agents.
